USAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Headquarters
and Recreational Facility
Norfolk, Virginia
LandMark Design Group was retained by USAA to provide planning,
landscape architecture and civil engineering services for the development
of recreational facilities at the USAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Headquarters
Offices in Norfolk, Virginia. The project site is located adjacent
to the offices on a 5.7-acre peninsula bounded by Lake Wright, a
City of Norfolk reservoir.
Program requirements included a vehicular and pedestrian glued-laminated
timber bridge over Lake Wright, two basketball/volleyball courts,
two tennis courts, a pavilion structure, restroom facilities, an
open playing field and a jogging trail with fitness stations.
As part of the design process, LandMark Design Group prepared several
schematic Master Plans to explore various design alternatives with
USAA. Preliminary construction estimates were also prepared to develop
project budgets.
Due to a short time frame for construction and to maximize tree
retention and protection, the site development was divided into
two phases. The first phase included construction of a temporary
bridge to gain access to the site, as well as initial clearing and
seeding of the open playing fields, installation of soil erosion
and sedimentation structures, tree protection fencing and selective
tree removal.
Due to the nature of this project and its location surrounded by
Lake Wright, a major water supply for Norfolk, LandMark Design Group
worked closely with the City of Norfolk staff to retain vegetation
and provide exemplary erosion and sediment control and water quality
protection.
